Chris Berman

In October 1979 – one month after its inception – ESPN hired a little-known 24-year-old sports anchor named Chris Berman. For more than four decades, Berman has become one of America’s most respected and popular sportscasters. Recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and various other organizations for his contributions to sports broadcasting, he has embodied ESPN with his combination of enthusiasm, knowledge, and wit. He is best known for his signature delivery of highlights in various sports, especially on NFL Sundays.

Six times Berman has been selected National Sportscaster of the Year by the members of the National Sports Media Association, and his studio shows have won 10 Emmy Awards and 12 CableACE Awards. Berman received the prestigious Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010 for his exceptional contributions to radio and television in professional football.

Berman's extensive coverage of baseball for ESPN includes play-by-play for the Emmy Award-winning telecast of Cal Ripken’s 2,131st consecutive game in 1995. He has also covered 31 All-Star games and 30 World Series. His ongoing involvement with the NFL includes over 30 years hosting "Sunday NFL Countdown" and providing commentary on "Monday NFL Countdown" and “The Blitz." Additionally, Berman hosts the segment "Chris Berman Remembers Stuart Scott," paying tribute to his late colleague.

Inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2017 and the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame, Berman's role in sports media has been extensively recognized. He was honored with the Newseum Institute’s Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media in 2016.

Alongside his sports broadcasting career, Berman has appeared in 15 motion pictures and made guest appearances on shows like "Sesame Street" and "Late Night with David Letterman." He has also performed on stage with musical acts such as Huey Lewis and the News.

Berman continues to be a prominent figure in ESPN’s NFL coverage, hosting "NFL PrimeTime" on ESPN+ and "The Fastest Three Minutes" during "Monday Night Football" halftimes. His role also includes play-by-play commentary for MLB divisional playoffs on ESPN Radio.

Chris Berman graduated from Brown University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, and in 1991, he was inducted into the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame. He resides in Connecticut, continuing his legacy as a key figure in sports journalism and broadcasting.
