Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band consists of Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, production), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums). Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, in The Beatles' 1967 film, “Magical Mystery Tour.”
Gibbard's first album, “You Can Play These Songs with Chords,” was released as a demo, leading to a record deal with Barsuk Records. It was at this time that Gibbard decided to expand the project into a complete band, and recruited the other band members to join.
“Something About Airplanes,” their debut album, was released in 1998 via Barsuk. It was followed in 2000 by, “We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes,” a concept album about a ruined relationship. Their third album on Barsuk, “The Photo Album,” was released in2001.
Their 2003 album, “Transatlanticism,” was released by Barsuk and reached #97 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. It was later certified gold by the RIAA.
In 2004, the band signed with Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of the Warner Music Group. Their first release on the label, “Plans,” earned a platinum certification and charted at #4 on the Billboard 200. The single, “Soul Meets Body” was the band's first to enter the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album at the 48th Grammy Awards in 2006.
Death Cab for Cutie topped the Billboard 200 chart with 2008’s “Narrow Stairs.” The single "I Will Possess Your Heart" was their second entry on the Billboard Hot 100. They were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” and “Narrow Stairs” was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009.
The band released, “The Open Door EP,” in 2009 containing tracks left off “Narrow Stairs” as well as a demo for “Talking Bird.” “The Open Door EP” was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010.
Their seventh full-length studio album, “Source Codes and Keys,” was released in 2011 via Atlantic Records. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200. The first single from the album was “You Are A Tourist.”
