Dr. Christina Maslach is an esteemed American social psychologist and a Professor Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Maslach is most recognized for her pioneering research on job burnout, and she is the co-author of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Areas of Worklife Survey, which have become mainstay tools in the field. Her comprehensive body of work includes numerous articles and books, including "Burnout: The Cost of Caring;" the co-edited volume "Professional Burnout: Recent Developments in Theory and Research" (with Wilmar Schaufeli); "The Truth About Burnout;" "Preventing Burnout and Building Engagement: A Complete Program for Organizational Renewal;" and "Banishing Burnout: Six Strategies for Improving Your Relationship with Work," co-authored with Michael Leiter. These publications, along with her consulting work with various organizations on job burnout issues, have had a significant impact on contemporary psychology.
In 1997, Maslach was honored as U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). She has also received the Distinguished Teaching Award and the Social Sciences Service Award from the University of California at Berkeley. Her professional achievements have led to her election as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, noted for her groundbreaking work on the applications of social psychology to contemporary problems, and as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Western Psychological Association. She also served as the President of the Western Psychological Association and as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
Today, Maslach holds the position of Chair of the Academic Senate at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior administrative posts she has occupied include Faculty Assistant (to the Chancellor) on the Status of Women, Vice-Chair of the Psychology Department, and leading the Chancellor's Commission on Responses to a Changing Student Body. Maslach continues to contribute to her field, speaking at various conferences and events.
She completed her A.B. degree, magna cum laude, in Social Relations from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1967 and her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1971.
