Dr. Gary Small

Gary Small, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, the Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Director of the UCLA Center on Aging. Small has created lifestyle and memory training programs aimed at improving brain health, which have been implemented in various settings across the U.S., including senior centers, community hospitals, and assisted living facilities. He invented the first brain scan that allows doctors to see the physical evidence of brain aging and Alzheimer's disease in living people.

Dr. Small has authored over 500 scientific works and more than a dozen popular books, including the New York Times bestseller "The Memory Bible." He has received the American Psychiatric Association’s Weinberg Award for Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry and has been named one of the world’s top 50 innovators in science and technology by Scientific American magazine. His research team is internationally recognized for their contributions to the understanding and prevention of brain aging and memory loss.

In his recent book, "iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind," Dr. Small explores the effects of modern technology on brain function. This work, along with his other publications like "The Memory Prescription," "The Longevity Bible," and "2 Weeks to a Younger Brain," illustrates his ability to translate complex scientific findings into practical advice and strategies for broad audiences. He regularly speaks at high-profile venues, including TEDxUCLA, and appears on TV programs such as "The Today Show," "Good Morning America," "20/20," and CNN, discussing his research and insights on aging, memory, and technology’s impact on the brain.
