Edwin Moses

Edwin Moses, a name synonymous with excellence in the world of athletics, earned international acclaim through his prowess in track and field. His feats include winning gold medals in the 400m hurdles at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics, a testament to his enduring athletic ability. His commitment to the sport extends beyond the track, as evidenced by his instrumental role in reforming Olympic eligibility rules, leading to the establishment of the Athlete's Trust Fund program in 1981. In recognition of his dedication and performance, Moses was awarded the Track & Field News Athlete of the Year award in 1980 and the Jesse Owens Award in 1981.

Not limited to his athletic achievements, Moses has also made significant contributions to sports administration. His efforts in combating doping led to the creation of the first random out-of-competition drug testing program in December 1988, setting a new standard for integrity in sports. Following this, Moses was elected as the first Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy in 2000, a role he has since held. He was also recognized by ESPN's SportCentury as one of the 50 Greatest Athletes, ranking 47th in 1999.

His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as numerous accolades and recognitions can attest. In 1994, Moses was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, a testament to his impact on the sport. His hometown, Dayton, Ohio, renamed Miami Boulevard West and Sunrise Avenue to "Edwin C. Moses Boulevard" in his honor in 1984. More recently, in 2018, he received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2023, he was inducted into the USTFCCCA Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame. His legacy in the athletics world continues to inspire, with the documentary film "Moses – 13 Steps" which premiered on September 21, 2024.
