Gary Farmer

Gary Farmer is a Canadian actor and musician born on the Six Nations along the Grand River, Ohsweken, Ontario. As a member of the Cayuga nation within the Haudenosaunee, Farmer has been active in the entertainment industry since 1988, appearing in a wide array of genres, including drama, comedy, and thriller. He is widely recognized as a pioneer in the development of Indigenous media in Canada and served as the founding director of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Network. Apart from broadcasting, he also published Aboriginal Voices Magazine from 1993 - 2003.

Farmer's career began on stage, where he worked in theater from 1975 - 1987 in Canada. His theatrical contributions were acknowledged when he won the Dora Mavor for best new play in 1989 for Tomson Highway’s "Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing." Transitioning to the screen, Farmer has made numerous appearances in TV shows and films such as "Resident Alien," "Rutherford Falls," "Reservation Dogs," "Longmire," and "Zoo." His TV movie credentials include roles in Blackwater, Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis, and Dreamkeeper.

Farmer has been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards for Best Supporting Male in the films: Powwow Highway (1989); Dead Man (1995), which won the 1996 European Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and Smoke Signals (1998). His body of work spans both Canadian and American productions, with his recent credits including regular roles in “The English," “The Curse," and Independent films such as Quantum Cowboys, Blood Quantum, The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw, and Run Woman Run.

Farmer is not just an actor but also a musician. He leads a blues band called Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers, which released its sixth album, “Fool For Love,” in the Fall of 2022.
