Greg O'Brien is a passionate advocate and author dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, particularly its impact on younger individuals. Diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s in 2009 at age 59, O’Brien has transformed his journey into a powerful narrative that resonates with many. He has over 35 years of experience as a writer, editor, investigative reporter, and publisher, with his work featured in prominent outlets such as the Boston Herald, Huffington Post, and USA Today. His book, "On Pluto: Inside the Mind of Alzheimer’s," offers a candid exploration of his experiences, reflecting the complexities and emotional toll of living with the disease.

Prior to his diagnosis, O'Brien faced early symptoms such as difficulty recalling names, confusion while driving, and increasing anxiety. These challenges began to impact his professional life, prompting him to rely on organizational tools and electronic reminders. As the symptoms worsened, O'Brien sought a diagnosis, eventually learning he carries the APOE-e4 gene, which heightens the risk of Alzheimer’s. His family history is deeply intertwined with the disease; his mother, father, paternal uncle, and maternal grandfather all succumbed to Alzheimer's, making his own diagnosis particularly poignant.

O’Brien's approach to his diagnosis is rooted in his background as an investigative journalist. Although initially overcome with emotion, he focused on understanding the facts and planning for the future with his wife, Mary Catherine. Together, they established powers of attorney and addressed their children about the diagnosis, fostering an environment of support and open communication. O'Brien has since shared his story nationwide, speaking at events like the Alzheimer’s Association’s Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, and has been featured in the documentary "Living with Alzheimer’s: A Place Called Pluto."

Through his advocacy, O'Brien aims to illuminate the experiences of those living with younger-onset Alzheimer’s and push for increased funding for research. He uses his platform to teach others to “live and speak through the heart as the brain diminishes,” striving to create a greater understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by the disease.
