Harry Elam Biography
Harry Elam, Jr. is the Olive H. Palmer Professor in the Humanities, vice president for the arts, senior vice provost for education, and Freeman-Thornton Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University.
A scholar on playwright August Wilson, he has directed professionally for over 25 years, most notably many of Wilson’s plays, including Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Two Trains Running, and the award-winning Fences.
Elam is author or editor of seven books, including the Erroll Hill Prize-winning The Past as Present in the Drama of August Wilson. Inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019, his multiple other honors include the Career Achievement Award from the Association of Theatre in Higher Education.
