Jamil Smith

Jamil is a senior writer for Rolling Stone magazine. He is also the host of the podcasts Intersection and The Stakes.

After covering the 2016 election as a Senior National Correspondent for MTV News, his my political and cultural commentary appeared in several outlets, including The New York Times, Esquire, and Washington Post. In November and December of 2017, he hosted ONE YEAR LATER, a special series for KCRW and Public Radio International that offered a fresh look at America in the year since President Trump’s election.

Previously, he was a weekly columnist for HuffPost and contributing opinion writer for the Los Angeles Times. He has also contributed recently to The Daily Beast, and his writing has been published of late in publications such as The New York Times, BuzzFeed, Vanity Fair, and The Washington Post.

Previously, Jamil was a Senior Editor at The New Republic, where he edited and wrote features and commentary for the print magazine and its website. His work there focused primarily on race, gender, law enforcement, and sports. he also spent more than four years working as a producer for msnbc’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “Melissa Harris-Perry.”

Earlier, as an associate producer at NFL Films, he earned three Sports Emmys for my work on “Inside the NFL” and the acclaimed documentary series “Hard Knocks.”
