Jerry Colangelo Biography
Jerry Colangelo is an American businessman and sports executive. He has formerly owned the Phoenix Suns of the NBA, the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA and the Arizona Diamondbacks of the MLB. He became the youngest general manager in professional sports in 1968 after being hired as general manager for the Phoenix Suns. Colangelo attended the University of Illinois, where he played basketball and earned All-Big Ten honors and served as captain of the basketball team in his senior year. He has since been inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame. While he was a student at the University of Illinois, he also played baseball for two years.
Colangelo has an autobiography out, How You Play the Game. Beginning in 2005, he was named director of USA Basketball. During his tenure with USA Basketball, the team played at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the FIBA World Championship in 2010. Colangelo is the current chairman of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Additionally, he serves as chairman of the National Italian-American Foundation, an organization that promotes Italian-American culture and heritage.
