Joe Washington

Joe Washington is a Cobb County Master Gardener and former broadcast journalist who turned “yard work” into a passion for landscape improvement and outdoor living around his own home. Washington's resources and expertise have kept him on top of the latest trends in outdoor living.

Washington has worked as a corporate spokesman, narrator and live presenter, with clients such as Georgia Power, IBM, The Home Depot, The US Postal Inspection Service, Spectrum Brands, and UPS. Prior to that Washington worked in local tv news at stations in Seattle, Denver and at Atlanta’s 11 Alive as a news and sports anchor and reporter. Washington was the original host of Groundbreakers, HGTV’s longest running landscaping show and he has collected over 15 acting credits with appearances in TV shows such as Army Wives, and The Originals, as well as on the big screen in Forrest Gump, Anchorman 2 and most recently The Front Runner.

Today Washington will talk about Adaptive Gardening. With more Americans over 65 years old than at any time in history, there is a trend toward aging in place. Homes are being built to accommodate our aging population and people with disabilities, so why not adapt our gardens to do the same? Washington will share information from experts in horticulture therapy and landscaping and he’s developed a “one-stop shop” with tools, tips and techniques to keep gardening on your lifetime “can-do” list.

Washington's personal interests include his two sons, both in their 20s and out of the house! Washington is also a big Atlanta Falcon and Hawks fan and enjoys motorsports, primarily Formula 1 racing. His new hobby is flying radio control aircraft. Washington is an avid reader and enjoys creating in the kitchen.
