John Doerr

John Doerr is an American venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He also served on the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board during the Obama administration and was a member of U.S. President Barack Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. In 2017, Forbes ranked Doerr as the 105th richest person in the United States and the 303rd richest person in the world.

Doerr joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 1980 and has since backed some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, including Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt of Google; Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com; and Scott Cook and Bill Campbell of Intuit. His ventures have created over 200,000 new jobs, reflecting his commitment to building substantial economic growth through innovative technology. Doerr serves on the boards of Amyris, Google, and Zynga, in addition to several other private technology ventures. He further demonstrated his expertise in venture capitalism by leading KPCB’s investment in Twitter.

Beginning his technology career in 1974 at Intel, Doerr has accumulated extensive experience across engineering, marketing, management, and sales. He was part of the team during the era when Intel was developing the 8080 microprocessor. After leaving Intel, he founded Silicon Compilers, a VLSI CAD software company, and co-founded @Home, a nationwide broadband cable Internet service. Outside of KPCB, Doerr actively supports various causes through organizations such as NewSchools.org, TechNet.org, the Climate Reality Project, and ONE.org, focusing on the environment, public education, and alleviating global poverty. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Doerr holds several patents for computer memory devices and is a distinguished member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
