John Lipsky served as First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund from September 1, 2006, to August 31, 2011. During his tenure, his leadership played a crucial role during a challenging era for the global economy, especially significant during the international financial crisis. Lipsky led the IMF delegation at the 37th G8 summit in Deauville, France, in May 2011.
Before his role at the IMF, Lipsky was Vice Chairman of the JPMorgan Investment Bank. He advised the firm's principal market risk takers, published independent research on global financial markets, and represented the firm globally with senior public and financial sector decision-makers. He also served as Chief Economist at JPMorgan and Salomon Brothers, Inc., and directed Salomon Brothers' European Economic and Market Analysis Group in London from 1989 to 1992.
Lipsky's earlier career included a decade at the IMF, managing the Fund's exchange rate surveillance procedure and contributing to international capital market analyses. He served as the Fund's Resident Representative in Chile from 1978 to 1980, participating in the design and implementation of major economic reforms. In addition to his IMF responsibilities, Lipsky chaired a Financial Sector Review Group in 2000 to provide an independent perspective on the Fund's work on international financial markets.
Currently, Lipsky holds several distinguished positions, including the Peterson Distinguished Scholar at the Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Institute at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and Executive Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He is also a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves as Co-Chair of the Aspen Institute’s Program on the World Economy. Known for his insights into global economic trends and policies, Lipsky frequently speaks at prominent events, offering perspectives on economic developments and their implications for the future.
A graduate of Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in economics, Lipsky furthered his education by earning an M.A. and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University. His extensive experience and ongoing contributions to global economic discussions make him a respected figure in international economic policy circles.
