John W. Nicholson Jr.

John William Nicholson Jr., a retired United States Army four-star general, commanded U.S. Forces – Afghanistan (USFOR-A) and the 41-nation NATO-led Resolute Support Mission from March 30, 2016, to September 2, 2018. Under his leadership, Nicholson was recognized for brokering the first nationwide ceasefire in the 17-year conflict in Afghanistan, a pivotal achievement reflecting strategic diplomacy during his tenure. Before his command in Afghanistan, he was the commanding general for the NATO Allied Land Command, headquartered in Turkey, and the 82nd Airborne Division. Notably, he is the longest-serving commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, holding the position for over two and a half years. Nicholson is the son of John W. Nicholson, also a former general officer in the United States Army, and holds claims to familial ties with British Brigadier General John Nicholson.

During his service, which spanned the administrations of Presidents Obama and Trump, Nicholson's commands were marked by significant military operations and strategic shifts. Notably, he authorized the use of the Massive Ordnance Air Burst (MOAB) in Nangarhar Province in April 2017, which played a crucial role in disrupting ISIS operations in the region. His tenure also saw the implementation of the South Asia Strategy in August 2017, intensifying the pressure campaign against hostile forces and their sponsors. Upon concluding his command, General Austin Scott Miller succeeded him in a ceremony in Kabul, where Nicholson was lauded for his dual capabilities as a "warrior-diplomat".

Nicholson's post-military career continues to be marked by significant contributions to leadership and strategic studies. He serves as an Adjunct Faculty member at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and participates in the university's Belfer Center Elbe Group, facilitating critical dialogues between retired American and Russian senior officials. Additionally, Nicholson mentors emerging leaders as part of the U.S. National Defense University Capstone Program. His insights are frequently sought in discussions on leadership, national security, and geopolitical shifts, addressing various audiences including Congressional Committees and international media.

In recognition of his service and leadership, Nicholson has received numerous accolades, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal, and international awards such as France’s Legion D’Honneur. His educational background includes a BA in History from Georgetown University and an MA in Operational Art from the School for Advanced Military Studies.
