Justin Simien Biography
Justin Simien is the creator, writer, director and producer of the critically acclaimed feature "Dear White People," which made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. The film won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent and was later nominated for both Independent Spirit and Gotham awards. Simien subsequently adapted the feature into a critically acclaimed series for Netflix, which ran for four seasons. Both the film and series tackled issues of racial tensions, identity, gender, sexuality and class on a fictional Ivy League campus. Simien leaned heavily on his own experiences attending Chapman University to help shape his story.
Simien is also the writer, director and producer of the feature film, "Bad Hair," a psychological thriller, and director of "The Haunted Mansion," a film adaptation of the popular Disney theme park attraction.
Simien previously hosted the podcast Don't @ Me, where he interviewed his entertainment industry peers. He also co-wrote the original songs in "Bad Hair" and wrote the companion book to "Dear White People." In 2020, he was featured as one of Hollywood Reporter’s 50 Most Powerful LGBTQ Players in Hollywood.
