Kareemah Batts

Kareemah Batts, a native of the Flatbush area in Brooklyn, New York City, is a cancer survivor, para climber, outdoor enthusiast, and diversity, equity, and inclusion professional. Raised by her maternal aunt and uncle from a young age due to her mother's behavioral disabilities, Batts was introduced to camping, fishing, and urban gardening, fostering her lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Her upbringing in a 7th-day Adventist household also instilled in her the values of natural health practices and community stewardship, which further ignited her passion for nature and public spaces.

Batts's academic journey includes attending Hunter College and earning a degree in Recreational Therapy, with ongoing studies in Business & Economics Management. Her professional path began with the NYC Department of Community Development, where she supported youth programs addressing homelessness and educational barriers. She also gained experience in marketing and publishing before transitioning to a career centered on her love for the outdoors and advocacy for inclusivity.

In 2009, Batts' life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, resulting in a partial leg amputation. This challenge led her to the Colorado Mountain School in 2011, where she discovered her passion for climbing and became the first female para climber in a USA Climbing Competition. In 2012, she founded the Adaptive Climbing Group, the largest climbing program for people with disabilities in the United States. She serves as the Program Director and volunteers her time on various committees and boards, promoting diversity in the outdoor industry.

Batts' contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the 2013 ADA Sapolin Award from NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the 2019 Climbing Advocate Award from Access Fund, and the 2023 "Change Maker of the Year" honor from the American Alpine Club. As a consultant, she collaborates with brands and organizations to develop sustainable, accessible opportunities for people with disabilities while traveling globally to share her experiences and advocate for underrepresented communities.
