Olympic Bronze Medalist (Tennis Singles) – 1996 Atlanta Olympics...becoming the only Indian in more than 4 decades to win an individual medal. (The previous individual medalist for India was K.D. Jadhav who won a bronze in 1952)....In the year 1999, playing alongside Mahesh Bhupathi, reached the finals of all the 4 grand slams, winning the Wimbledon and the French Open, thus becoming the first Indian pair to win a doubles event at a Grand slam event.
First passion was football and Was selected by PSV Eindhoven for junior football program. Started playing Tennis at the age of 5.
His Father was an outstanding Sportsman and was part of the Indian Hockey team that won the Bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Games. His mother, Jennifer, captained National Basketball team.
Selected by Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy (BAT) in Chennai for training....First win: 1990 Junior Wimbledon title, 1991 Junior US Open title....World #1 Junior in 1990...Turned pro in 1991...Started playing Davis Cup at age 15.
India's highest honor, the Padma Shri in 2001...Awarded the Arjuna Award for Sports Excellence in 1998...Awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 1996-97.
