Malte Jung is an Associate Professor in Information Science at Cornell University and the Nancy H. ’62 and Philip M. ’62 Young Sesquicentennial Faculty Fellow. His research sits at the intersection of teamwork, technology, and emotion, with a primary focus on understanding and improving technology-supported collaboration in various environments. Jung leads the Robots in Groups Lab, where his team investigates how group dynamics can be shaped by robots, both implicitly and through intentional design. His work aims to deepen our understanding of group interactions and inform how we can design technology to better support teamwork in diverse settings.
Jung’s academic journey began with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, along with a Ph.D. minor in Psychology, from Stanford University. His doctoral research uniquely applied theories originally developed to predict divorce in married couples to predict the performance of engineering design teams, illustrating his innovative approach to interdisciplinary research. Before joining Cornell, he completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Work, Technology, and Organization at Stanford, furthering his expertise in organizational behavior and technology integration.
In addition to his research, Jung’s academic background includes a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Munich and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. His work has had significant implications not only for academic theory but also for practical applications in fields like engineering, technology, and organizational development. Jung’s unique blend of engineering and psychology has made him a leading voice in the study of how technology can be designed to enhance teamwork and improve group performance.
Through his continued research and leadership at Cornell, Malte Jung is shaping the future of collaborative work, helping organizations better understand the role of technology in team dynamics and how to leverage it for improved outcomes. His work is at the forefront of the growing field of human-robot interaction and its potential to transform how we work together.
