Mary Cain Biography
Mary Cain is a professional mid-distance runner and founder of Atalanta NYC, a nonprofit organization that employs and supports professional female runners so they can simultaneously achieve their athletic goals and build their career skills.
After sharing her story about being abused by her coach in a 2019 Op-Ed in The New York Times, Cain has dedicated her career to driving change in sport, with an emphasis on athlete well-being and gender equity. She works part-time at New York Road Runners and serves on the board of The Army of Survivors, a nonprofit that brings awareness, accountability, and transparency to sexual violence against athletes at all levels. In 2022, she was named a Team USA Community Champion by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Foundation.
Cain had a record-breaking professional running career that included becoming the 2014 World Junior Champion in the 3,000 meters, and she was a 2013 World Championships finalist in the 1,500 meters. She is the youngest American athlete ever to represent the United States at a track and field World Championships meet.
