Mike Fratello Biography
Mike Fratello is a former NBA coach and current broadcaster. As a coach, Fratello worked as an assistant at Rhode Island, James Madison and Villanova in the 1970s before joining the Atlanta Hawks as an assistant in 1978 and the New York Knicks in the same capacity in 1982. He got his first head coaching job with Atlanta in 1983 and led the Hawks until 1990. He then served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers (1993-1999) and Memphis Grizzlies (2004-2006). He was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 1986 and a head coach for the All-Star Game in 1988. Fratello is one of the winningest coaches in NBA history in both games coaches (1,215) and regular season wins (667). He also served as head coach of the Ukraine National Team from 2011-2014.
Fratello has also enjoyed a successful broadcasting career. He got his first job working as a color commentator for the Los Angeles Clippers from 1990-1992 and would go on to work as an analyst for TNT, NBA TV, NBC Sports and YES Network. Fellow broadcaster Marv Albert called Fratello “The Czar of the Telestrator” for his ability to draw plays. Fratello was born in Hackensack, New Jersey and went to college at Monclair State College.
