Pitts is a citizen of the world, having lived in Paris, London, Atlanta, and Washington, DC.

Pitts holds a BA in both History and African American Studies from Indiana University – Bloomington and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Indiana University's Mauer School of Law, where she served as president of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA).
