Norman Pearlstine has had an extensive and influential career in the media industry, spanning over five decades across the U.S., Asia, and Europe. He began his career with a pivotal role as the first Managing Editor of "The Asian Wall Street Journal" in Hong Kong before ascending to Managing Editor and later Executive Editor of "The Wall Street Journal" in New York. Following his tenure at The Wall Street Journal, Pearlstine launched "Smart Money" magazine in 1992 in collaboration with Dow Jones & Co. and Hearst Corp. He then served as Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc. from 1995 to 2005, where he oversaw up to 154 magazines.
After leaving Time Inc., Pearlstine joined The Carlyle Group as a Senior Advisor for Telecom & Media in 2006. He then moved to Bloomberg L.P. in 2008, serving as Chief Content Officer until 2013, during which time he managed Bloomberg Businessweek and Bloomberg Government. Returning to Time Inc. as Chief Content Officer, he also served as Vice Chairman until 2017. His next major role was as Executive Editor of the "Los Angeles Times" from 2018 to 2020. Currently, Pearlstine serves as a Senior Advisor at The Carlyle Group, focusing on technology and innovation in media.
Pearlstine has been recognized for his contributions to journalism and media with several prestigious awards. He has been inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame and received both the Gerald Loeb Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Press Foundation's Editor of the Year Award. Beyond his executive roles, he authored "Off the Record: The Press, the Government, and the War over Anonymous Sources" in 2007, which provides an insider's view on journalism's interactions with government agencies. Additionally, he has participated in significant industry discussions, including a virtual talk titled "Rethinking the LA Times in challenging times" on The News Project in 2020 and a keynote on "Journalism and Media: Past, Present, and Future" at the Moody College of Communication in 2016. Pearlstine also shared insights on media survival during a panel at the DLD Conference in 2016.
