PJ Morton is a musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Since 2010, he has been involved with the pop-rock band Maroon 5, initially joining as a touring member before becoming an official keyboardist in 2012. Morton released his debut solo EP, "Following My First Mind," in March 2012, via the Young Money record label. The lead single, "Heavy," featured contributions from Adam Levine and James Valentine. Morton's first major-label debut album, "New Orleans," was released in May 2013.
The musician opened his own record label, Morton Records, in 2016, and released the mixtape "Bounce & Soul Vol. 1" in March of the same year, followed by the EP "Sticking to My Guns" in July. In April 2017, Morton released his first self-released studio album, "Gumbo." This release earned him two Grammy Award nominations: Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song, at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. He added to his discography with the release of the gospel album "Gospel According To PJ" in August 2020, featuring artists like The Clark Sisters and Yolanda Adams.
In addition to his music career, Morton has made notable contributions to film and television. He composed music for the web series "Champaign ILL" in 2018 and the TV series "Soul City" in 2020. Additionally, he contributed to the soundtrack for the movie "Couples Retreat" with the song "Sajna," and made guest appearances in TV series such as "NCIS: New Orleans" in 2017 and "American Idol" in 2021.
In April 2019, Morton announced his intention to restore the New Orleans home of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden into a museum and community space. His efforts in music continued with the release of his sixth album "Paul," and the hit song "Say So," a collaboration with singer JoJo. "Paul" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and "Say So" for Best R&B Song at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Furthermore, "Built for Love" received a Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category.
Morton's recent work includes a feature on the track "Ego" from Barbara Bandeira's debut album "Finda" in October 2023, and writing the song "Special Spice" for the theme park attraction "Tiana's Bayou Adventure," inspired by the movie "The Princess and the Frog." In 2024, he won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song "Good Morning," which he released featuring Susan Carol in 2023, and had previously won the same award for the song "How Deep Is Your Love," featuring Yebba, in 2018.
