Phil Rosenthal was born in Queens, New York, and moved with his family to New City, New York in Rockland County during his childhood. After completing his education at Hofstra University on Long Island, where he studied theater, he began his career in New York City as an actor, writer, and director. In 1989, he relocated to Los Angeles.
Rosenthal's career took a significant turn when he created the hit CBS comedy, "Everybody Loves Raymond," which premiered in 1996. He served as the Showrunner/Executive Producer throughout the show's nine-year run until 2005. The series received wide acclaim, garnering over 70 Emmy nominations and winning 15, including two for Best Comedy Series in 2003 and 2005. Rosenthal himself won the 2002 Writers Guild Award for Excellence in Television Writing for the "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode titled "Italy."
His other writing credits include "Down the Shore" and "Coach," as well as co-writing "America: A Tribute to Heroes," the 9/11 telethon that was broadcast on all four major networks in September 2001. This program won a Peabody Award and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing.
Following his television success, Rosenthal ventured into publishing with his book, "You're Lucky You're Funny: How Life Becomes a Sitcom," released in 2006, which explores the craft of comedy and the creation of a sitcom classic. He also wrote, directed, and starred in "Exporting Raymond," a feature film produced by Sony Pictures in 2011 that documents his experiences adapting "Everybody Loves Raymond" for Russian television, which was critically acclaimed.
In television, Rosenthal continued to explore international cultures and cuisines with the PBS series "I'll Have What Phil's Having" in September 2015, although it was canceled after one season. However, he revisited this theme with the Netflix series "Somebody Feed Phil," which premiered on January 12, 2018. This series has been well-received for its heartfelt and humorous exploration of global food cultures.
Rosenthal currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Monica Horan, and their two children. His ongoing work in television continues to engage audiences, bridging humor with cross-cultural explorations.
