Rais Bhuiyan

Rais Bhuiyan's journey began in Bangladesh, deeply influenced by his parents and a strong adherence to Islamic beliefs in forgiveness. After moving to Dallas for opportunities in computer technology, a life-altering event in 2001 would test his convictions. Just weeks after 9/11, Bhuiyan was severely injured by a white supremacist who targeted him as the "Arab slayer." Though the assailant, Mark Stroman, was later sentenced to death for his crimes, Bhuiyan embarked on an extensive campaign advocating for Stroman's sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment, a campaign that reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Despite the execution of Stroman, Bhuiyan continues to lead his initiative, World Without Hate, promoting healing, compassion, and forgiveness. His efforts have been recognized with several awards, including the 2011 American of the Year by Esquire Magazine, the Excellence for Human Service Award from United for Change, the Search for Common Ground Award, and the 2014 Human Relations Award from the Muslim Public Affairs Council Foundation. His story has not only been a catalyst for societal change but has also inspired "The True American: Murder & Mercy in Texas" by Anand Giridharadas, a book that is being adapted into a film, and he is featured in the documentary "An Eye for An Eye."

Currently a full-time IT executive at Sabre Corporation in Dallas, Bhuiyan is also an active public speaker and human rights advocate. He has engaged with diverse audiences including the European Union, German Parliament, Amnesty International, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, as well as various universities, churches, mosques, and social justice groups. His speeches focus on the transformative power of forgiveness and the need for societal change, tailored to meet the specific interests and needs of his listeners. His story and message continue to resonate widely, as evident from his successful public appearances and features in media, including the documentary series "The Secret Life of Muslims" and a segment on CBS Sunday Morning.
