Steven Roberts

Steven Roberts has been a journalist for nearly 50 years, covering significant historical events from the antiwar movement and student revolts of the 60s and 70s to President Reagan's historic trip to Moscow in 1988 and twelve presidential election campaigns. His in-depth reporting and analysis have made him a leading political pundit and a trusted voice in journalism.

After graduating from Harvard magna cum laude in 1964, Roberts joined the New York Times as a research assistant to James 'Scotty' Reston, then the paper's Washington bureau chief. Over a 25-year tenure with the Times, he held positions such as bureau chief in Los Angeles and Athens, and served as a Congressional and White House correspondent. He then spent seven years as a senior writer at U.S. News, specializing in national politics and foreign policy. Alongside his wife, TV journalist Cokie Roberts, he co-authors a nationally-syndicated newspaper column.

Roberts has published several books, including "From This Day Forward," a New York Times bestseller co-authored with his wife, which explores their marriage and other American marriages throughout history. His memoir "My Fathers' Houses" and the book "From Every End of This Earth," which profiles 13 immigrant families, both gained significant attention, with the latter being featured at the National Book Festival. His latest work, "Our Haggadah," co-written with his wife, explores interfaith marriage and was discussed on national TV shows like "This Week" and "Morning Joe."

A regular commentator on various Washington-based TV shows, Roberts also provides political analysis on the ABC radio network and has guest-hosted NPR’s "Diane Rehm Show." Since 1997, he has been the Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, where he is also recognized for his excellence in teaching, having won the Bender prize as one of GW’s top undergraduate teachers and receiving four honorary doctorates.

Roberts has been honored with several awards including the Dirksen Award for covering Congress, the Wilbur Award for reporting on religion and politics, and the Public Service Sector Award from the Aspen Institute. He has also been recognized by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the “Top 50 Journalists.” His contributions to the field of journalism and his impact on public understanding make him a distinguished figure in American media.
