Sylvia del Carmen Roberts

Dr. Sylvia del Carmen Roberts is a Latina Founder and Senior Researcher at A Learning Brain, where she provides professional learning services and consulting on psychology topics for educational and corporate clients in English and Spanish.
For over 15 years, she has presented to various audiences on a range of research-based topics, including growth mindset, social-emotional learning (SEL), mindsets in the workplace, and STEM motivation and performance. She also consults organizations interested in learning more about SEL and ways to support it within their organization.

In her prior role as the Director of Research and Implementation at Mindset Works, Inc., she provided program and research consultation to many schools, districts, and organizations across the U.S. and abroad. She also served as Co-Principal Investigator of a large-scale, multi-million dollar randomized-control trial to test the efficacy of a blended-learning program that teaches a growth mindset, the understanding that abilities are malleable, and study strategies to middle school students. Published results from the trial showcase some of the largest gains in achievement due to an educational intervention, especially for students from diverse backgrounds.



Dr. Roberts holds a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University, a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and a Minor in Spanish language from Princeton University. She also received the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which recognizes scientists for their contributions to STEM. As a published researcher, her work has been featured in various outlets, including the New York Times and WNYC.

She is a proud first-generation Mexican American whose experiences growing up and learning about growth mindsets and SEL inspired her to connect with others about the important ways that mindsets can empower and shift the way we work and achieve. In her free time, Dr. Roberts enjoys singing karaoke (especially rancheras), writing poetry, podcasting, and mentoring BIPOC youth.
