Thomas Dolby

Thomas Dolby, born Thomas Morgan Robertson on October 14, 1958, has demonstrated a unique blend of musical talent and technological prowess throughout his career. Initially gaining fame in the early 1980s with hits like "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Hyperactive," Dolby has continued to innovate, particularly in the realms of electronic music and multimedia. Besides his achievements in music, he has made substantial contributions to technology, notably as the founder and CEO of Beatnik Inc, which developed the polyphonic ringtone software that became a standard in mobile devices.

Dolby's career began in the post-punk scene of the late 1970s before he launched a solo career that led to international recognition. Besides his music career, Dolby’s interest in technology led him to form Headspace in the early '90s, which was later renamed Beatnik. His work in technology and music intersected brilliantly during his tenure as the Music Director for TED from 2001 to 2012, where he not only programmed music but also assembled house bands, enriching the conference experience.
