Tipper Gore

Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore (née Aitcheson) is an American social issues advocate who served as Second Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. She is the former wife of Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States, from whom she separated in 2010.

Gore has been a proactive advocate for mental health, homelessness, and issues related to the impact of media on society. In 1985, she co-founded the Parents' Music Resource Center (PMRC), which advocated for the labeling of record covers to inform parents and consumers about releases featuring explicit language, especially in genres like heavy metal, punk, and hip hop. Throughout her career, she has utilized her platform to address and support various causes, including her role as Mental Health Policy Advisor to President Bill Clinton. During this tenure, she convened the first-ever White House Conference on Mental Health in 1999 focusing on eradicating stigma and advocating for parity in mental health care.

Today, Gore remains actively engaged in advocacy, education, and philanthropy. She founded Tennessee Voices for Children, an organization dedicated to supporting parents, children, families, and individuals facing mental health challenges, reaching over 150,000 individuals annually. Her commitment extends to her photographic work, through which she addresses social issues such as homelessness and media violence's effect on children. Gore’s photographs have been featured in galleries, museums, and publications, and she has hosted gallery auctions to support organizations aiding those living with HIV/AIDS. Moreover, she published "Picture This: A Visual Diary," which reflects her advocacy through photography. Gore continues to champion quality, affordable healthcare and works tirelessly to support various communities, including the LGBT community and those impacted by poverty and conflict.
