Tracie Thoms

Tracie Thoms is a TV, film, and stage actress who is best known for starring as Joanne Jefferson in Rent and The Devil Wears Prada as Lily.

Thoms was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She started studying acting when she was 10 years old and later on attended the Baltimore School for the Arts, then Howard University where she earned a BFA and then she completed a postgraduate diploma in acting from the Julliard School.

Her resume includes a multitude of television roles. She is known for her role of Mahandra McGinty from the TV show "Wonderfalls," the role of Sasha from the series "As If," and, of course, the CBS drama "Cold Case," in which she played the role of Kat Miller, a series regular. She has also made guest appearances on "Law & Order," "The Shield," and "Private Practice." She's appeared on "Human Target" and a few episodes of "Harry's Law."

Thoms has appeared in many movies. She is probably most well-known for her role in the film adaption of the Broadway musical "Rent." She plays Joanne Jefferson, the lawyer, and lover of Maureen Johnson (played by Idina Menzel.) Prior to being cast in the "Rent" movie, Thoms was a self-proclaimed "RENThead" ("Rent" fan) herself.

Thoms also appeared in the 2002 Comedy Central film, Porn 'n Chicken and the 2004 films Brother to Brother and The Warrior Class. She appeared in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada along with Anne Hathaway.

Thoms also appears in the City Lights Pictures movie Descent along with friend and RENT co-star Rosario Dawson whom she co-starred with again in Quentin Tarantino's film, Death Proof. She also appeared in the 2007 film Sex and Breakfast and the 2009 film Peter and Vandy. Thoms appeared in Chris Rock's Good Hair.

Thoms is still singing and acting. She appeared in the Netflix series "Love" from 2016 to 2018 and began filming new crime-drama series "Are You Sleeping" alongside Octavia Spencer in 2019.
